Visitor, the next big thing is FOG computing.

banner

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to our May 2016 Newsletter.

Fog Computing – the next big thing?

Enterprise CIOs are finding that many of the services, apps and data their users depend on are better suited if kept on premise or in small enterprise data centers, which brings us to the next big thing – fog computing. Cloud computing may not be all it has been hyped up to be with its gigantic data centers storing millions of terabytes of data and running countless apps. Mobility, business intelligence and real-time analytics are just some of the reasons that fog computing makes sense. Cisco came up with “fog computing” and along with Dell, Microsoft, Intel, ARM, and Princeton University researchers a hybrid model of information, applications and services divided between the cloud and fog is what they see in the future. In October of 2012 when Hurricane Sandy hit data centers in New York and New Jersey were compromised reminding cloud service providers and consumers of the importance of redundancy separated by distance.

Another Scam – “A serious malfunction has been detected with Windows 10….”

Please do not click on anything if you get this popup on your computer.  Go to the Start icon on your desktop, select the Power icon, then select Restart. Basically, you want to Restart your PC without possibly engaging any other virus or malware.

This popup is a scam to get the user to call the phone number on the screen.  Once you call this number, they ask you to provide your credit card number so they can charge you for bogus services.

The scammers will get on your computer, perform some work, and thereafter follow up with an email indicating the work they did, however, all along all they wanted is to capture your credit card and charge $250+.

Windows PC Users – Uninstall QuickTime!

Apple is no longer issuing security updates for QuickTime web plug-ins on Windows PCs and two flaws have been discovered by security experts.

If you  have not already done so, now is the time to uninstall QuickTime. An update will not be issued for the flaws which could increase the risk of a virus/security threat. Windows is capable of running Apple media and even iTunes on Windows does not need QuickTime.

The only potential need for it would be for those who have a third-party program depending on it such as Premier Pro, Adobe’s video editing software, and Adobe is working on removing the incompatibilities.

Traffic Lights in Sidewalks

Pedestrians looking down at their phone can unintentionally find themselves hurt, as has been the case in Augsburg, Germany. Distracted by a smartphone and headphones, a 15-year-old girl was killed by a quiet electric street train.  Two other incidents in Germany, although not lethal, have compelled Augsburg to install traffic lights on the ground.

The rapidly blinking red lights are to get the attention of the pedestrians so they will see the approaching tram. A “smombie” is a popular word in Germany meaning smartphone zombie and the problem is a global one.

The University of Washington has estimated one in three Americans at a dangerous road crossing have their head in a smartphone. In China there is an area of pavement stretching 165 feet where pedestrians choose a normal lane or a “smombie” lane.
