The new Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge: refinement and progress

The new Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge were released this month and go on sale starting March 11.

The new galaxy models boast beautiful design as well as function.  The new S7 comes packed with a 12 megapixel camera, a 5.5 or 5.1 display, a 3600/3000 mAh battery, and 32gb of memory that’s expandable up to 200gb through the micro SD slot.

All of this is wrapped in a beautiful curved design that’s easy to hold and best of all: water-resistant. The S7’s come with the latest android Marshmallow OS, giving you the latest and greatest OS from android.

The S7’s bring great refinement from the S6, for device support and email setup call us at Sierra.

Netgear & D-Link routers: serious vulnerabilities

Last week researchers, with the help of an open-source framework called FIRMADYNE, extracted 9,486 of 23,000 images from 42 embedded device manufacturers.  They found that 887 of the images were vulnerable to at least one of 74 known exploits.  Also, the researchers found 14 previously unknown vulnerabilities in 69 firmware images in 12 products; some of them were found in products from Netgear and D-Link. Hackers are increasingly looking to exploit the lack of security in the embedded device world whether it be routers, DSL modems, VoIP phones, IP cameras, or other devices.  Last week as well, ASUS, a Taiwan-based computer hardware maker, agreed to settle charges with the Federal Trade Commission for putting the home networks of consumers at risk because of critical security flaws in its routers. The settlement highlighted the FTC’s position that manufacturers are responsible for the security of connected devices and are expected to promptly update or patch any identified vulnerability. If you are questioning the vulnerability of your embedded device, send Sierra an email or give us a call.

Ransomware: the new malware on the block

Imagine you open your laptop, computer, or even your mobile device, and all your data is gone. All your work files, family pictures, contacts list, and emails somehow gone, and you receive a message stating that if you want all your data back, you’ve got to pay up.  Welcome to ransomware. Ransomware is a new type of malicious hacking tool that will hold all your data in an encrypted archive that requires a password to open it.  The only way to get the password is by paying the hacker who seized your data in the first place in hope that they will give you the password to release your data.  Failure to pay them could result in loss of data or possibly releasing sensitive files to the public. Hackers are banking on users who are not privy to their tools of penetration which usually come as file attachments, or through social engineering.  Be wary of any emails or messages from people you don’t know that either have attachments or contain offers that sound too good to be true.  Be smart when browsing websites and be extremely wary of giving out personal information.

Daylight Saving Time (DST): spring forward – begins Sunday, March 13th at 2am

Adjust your clocks one hour forward before going to bed on Saturday night and it will help you to be on time for any appointments the next day.

By springing forward, as they say, you will get to experience an extra hour of evening daylight. DST was formally introduced to this country in 1918, signed into law in 1966 by President Lyndon Johnson, and overseen by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Daylight Saving Time occurs in many states and territories except Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Indian Reservation, which does observe DST), Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Island.
